The first Jeep Wrangler was manufactured and released in 1987. The Wranglers released from 1987 until 1992 are known as the YJ, because that's how they were marketed in Canada, where they are built. The Wranglers released after 1997 are known as the TJ model. Jeep enthusiasts and people who spend a lot of time working on, restoring, driving, or repairing Jeeps use these terms because they are more specific than the generic "wrangler" which gives very little actual information about the vehicle. After 2007, the new JK was unveiled. The JK is more widely known as the Wrangler Unlimited, of which there are three different types. The Jeep Wrangler was originally built to replace the slow-selling Jeep CJ in 1987. While it was similar in some respects, it had differences, too, including a wider wheel base, less ground clearance, and more comfort. The focus on personal comfort has remained high through the past two decades, as the Unlimited model has increased comfort, space, and safety. The Wrangler was improved annually after its release, becoming more and more safe for families as well as off-road travel. For example, airbags became standard in 1992. Because of the constant improvements, the Jeep Wrangler has increased in popularity both in the States and worldwide. An entire subculture has begun to develop as a result of enthusiasts, off-road drivers, collectors, and more. There are many online forums devoted to the various models of Jeep, and you can find all sorts of advice, helpful hints, and stores for parts and accessories
