When you change
the tire size on your Jeep from the original size, it will have
a direct effect on your Jeep's power and handling. The chart listed
below should assist you in selecting the optimum gear ratio to regain
the performance for your Jeep.
When using
the chart, determine your Jeep's original gear ratio and tire size,
then follow the indicators to the intersection where you will find
your Jeep's approximate RPMs at 65 MPH. The next step is to go to
your proposed new tire size and follow that across to the closest
RPM listing to your original one, then determine the gear ratio
listed above. This proposed gear ratio would be a good choice to
maintain the performance levels. If you are interested in improving
your Jeep's power or it's fuel economy, you can then use the color
codes as a guide for selecting another gear ratio.
The
chart is based on a speed of 65 Miles Per Hour and a gear ratio of
1:1 with a manual transmission in 4th gear. Please Note: If
you have an automatic transmission your RPMs will be higher due to
slippage in the transmission and the torque converter. With an overdrive
transmission your RPMs in overdrive will be 15% to 30% less than indicated.
